Learn a short fascinating history of the world's tallest structure
Radio Mast in Konstantynów - The tallest structure in the history of Poland
The Konstantynów Radio Mast, also known as the Konstantynów Radio Broadcasting Center, was an impressive engineering structure located in central Poland, near Gąbin in the Masovian Voivodeship.
Erected in 1974, the mast reached a dizzying height of 646.38 meters, which made it not only the tallest structure in Poland, but also the tallest structure in the world at that time. This monumental structure was made of steel and held vertically by a guy system.
The main purpose of the mast was to broadcast Polish Radio Program I on long waves. Thanks to its height and transmitter power, the radio signal could reach the most remote corners of the country and even beyond its borders. The mast played a key role in Poland's radio communication system, providing reliable information and entertainment to millions of listeners.
Unfortunately, this impressive structure did not stand the test of time. On August 8, 1991, during maintenance works, a construction disaster occurred. The mast collapsed, which was not only a loss for the Polish radio communication infrastructure, but also the end of the era of the world's tallest structure.
It is worth mentioning that despite its height, the mast in Konstantynów was not visible from long distances due to its slender structure. However, at night its aircraft warning lights created an unforgettable sight, resembling a "Christmas tree" floating high above the ground.
Although the mast no longer exists, it remains an important element of Poland's history of engineering and radio communications, symbolizing the country's technological ambitions in the second half of the 20th century.
